Stop automatic update to assigned tasks

We assign tasks frequently using Outlook 2003 but the "assigner" gets
overwhelmed with the automatic updates from the "assignees" when they use the
task list to jot down project notes, reminders, etc. without actually
changing the % complete. Is there any way for the "assignee" to turn off the
automatic updates when just making notes and only send updates to the
"assigner" when work is actually done on the project?

Are both the keep an updated copy enabled and send me a status report when
completed checked? The assigner needs to use just the status report when
completed option.

Everything is turned on by default right now. If "Keep updated copies on my
task list" is not checked will it show up on their task list (of the
assigner)?
