The kids hve been playing with my wife's PowerBook. Now it launches Word
(and skype) automatically at startup.
How can one stop that?

Your kids are way cool. Why don't you ask them?

OK, here's how..
For each affected user..
System Preferences » Accounts » Login Items
adjust to taste.
Skype installs itself like that, so it might not be the kids' fault.

Were the kids hacking 'parental controls' on the button next door?
Tsk. Somebody needs to set up that Mac for better security.
At the very least, give the kids their own non-administrator accounts
and set the Mac to require password on wake.

Also, it might be very easy to select "Open at Login" when you right-click
on the icon in the dock, even by accident. And, I just did some random
testing, and it seems just as easy to turn "Open at Login" off via the
right-click on the dock app icon. No need to bother with Sys Prefs.

Is the right-click to "Open at Login" new in some Tiger update? I feel like
I just saw it on a tip, but I don't pay much attention to those menus.

Heh! I never knew that either. (You can tell I'm Mr Mouseless!)
...and as for right-clicks, only Windows weenies use right-clicks.

Err, but I recently bought a tail-less Mighty Mouse, and, after
swapping left and right, I'm finding the odd use for it. Strangely, I
found swapping left and right in prefs made it work better for using it
in my left hand.

Yes, that feature was introduced in Tiger. It's been there from the
beginning, though, i.e. since 10.4.0.

For those with one-button mice or trackpads, a reminder that
click-and-hold on the dock brings up the contextual menu after a second
or two. (Control-click works too, of course.)
