stop MS Query from connecting when starting

I have several hundred spreadsheets in which I need to edit the query.
It would be much easier if MS Query would simply let me edit the query,
rather than trying to open the data source 1st, which I have no access to,
since my client's network is not accessible.
Right now, I save as XML, edit the strings with notepad, open again in
Excel, save as XLS.
Really painful and error prone.
I just need to change the default startup behavior of MS Query to NOT connect.

The spreadsheet does not auto refresh the query when opening.
If you choose to edit the query, msquery automatically tries to connect to
the database.
Since the server does not exist on the network that I'm working on, it times
out after a few minutes.
I can find no other query properties other than wheter to aut-run the query
when the spreadsheet opens.
