Stop "My Documents" From Being Default

How can I stop the "My Documents" folder from being the default every
time I try to save something? I never use My Documents for anything,
but it just keeps coming up.

Maybe my question is actually two-fold: (1) How can I change the
default from My Documents to something else; and (2) Can I get rid of
My Documents altogether - just delete it?

Well you don't say what version of Word you are using, but certainly in 2007
there is an option to change the default file location. have you looked
through all the Options menus?

Oh, sorry -- it's Word 2002.

I also just realized that I made a mistake with where I posted this --
this is not a Word question, but instead I think it is a Windows
question. Sorry about that.

I don't think you can get rid of My Documents, so you might as well use it.
I have subfolders in My Documents for Word Documents, Excel Spreadsheets,
Publisher Publications, etc. You can set the default starting folder for
word by modifying the path for "Documents" on the File Locations tab of
Tools | Options. This sets the folder Word will default to the first time
you save a new document after starting Word, but note that if you have
chosen a different folder since starting Word, it will default to the
last-used folder.

Prior to 2007: Tools> Options> File Locations

In 2007: Office Pizza button> Word Options> Save

But you might also want to consider just making your own hierarchies of
folders within the My Documents location.

Thanks, Suzanne -- I think you are probably right - I don't think it
can be gotten rid of! Ugh! I just don't do things the way that
Microsoft thinks I should, so I have absolutely no use for it at all.

I think you may be able to rename it. I know you can rename My Computer.

You can rename it - and/or move it to wherever you want. I have mine on a D:
drive.

There is a good reason to retain it, especially if you use one of the common
utilities to back up your data, which you probably don't do.

You're right, I don't use one of the common utilities for backup.

I can see why the folder "Documents and Settings" should be retained,
but I don't see anything in the "My Documents" folder that matters if
one doesn't use anything in there. What am I missing?
