Stop Outlook from locking out all other apps while it Sends/Receiv

Outlook 2003 11.8217.8202 under XP Pro SP 3

Every time Outlook Sends/Receives, it locks me out of any app I am using.
For example, if I am typing into Word, Word freezes while Outlook
Sends/Receives, and even loses everything in the keyboard buffer. The same
applies to working in Outlook itself.

This is infuriating. It turns my fast PC into a slug, and makes me sit and
wait while Outlook completes its business. Help!

And with what OTHER apps than those in Office does sending/receiving in
Outlook cause lockups?

Tried disabling e-mail scanning in your antivirus software yet?
