Stop re-downloading old email!

Wifey's PC with Outlook 2003 keeps trying to download ~8,000 old emails
whenever it starts to check mail. ISP tech sup tried to help her for 1.5hr,
to no avail. Concluded it's an Outlook problem.

We have run scanpst and repairpst, and got the "repaired" signal at end.
Problem still exists. The PST is now about 2.4 GB size.
Will anything else really help without reinstalling? (Within weeks prior,
she tried to archive some of the older email but it didn't seem to succeed.)
Absent a cure, maybe it's time to replace Outlook at last (I have never used
it on my own PC, 10 yrs).

Reinstalling will probably not help as it is quite likely that this issue is
actually being caused by your virus scanner which integrates itself with
Outlook and not by Outlook itself. Uninstall this integration part of your
virus scanner (disabling it will often not help) and then try again.

This means that Outlook cannot detect that it has downloadd these messages
before. As Robert said, it could be caused by scanning with your AV program,
but it could be something as common as having created a new mail profile. At
any rate, she can log into the mail server, move the contents of the INbox
there to another folder she can create, and then Outlook won't be able to see
them to download them. They'll still be available online, though.
