stop word indenting auto-numbered lists

Andy Fish

Hi,

When I create a numbered list by either the auto-correct style (i.e. I
type in a line that starts with "1.") or by using the numbered list
toolbar, the items in the list are always indented from the rest of
the text. I would like the number to be lined up with the left hand
edge of the paragraph.

I know I can reformat the list afterwards, and I have seen KB 220478
which says this behaviour is by design, but surely there must be some
way of using the customize options to set 0 indent as the default?

Thanks

Andy

I'm not sure what you mean here. how do I know what style to modify?

For instance, if I start with a blank document and type in a numbered list,
the dropdown box of styles reads "Numbered, Left: 0.63 cm, Hanging: 0.63
cm" but that's not in the list of styles I can edit.

in the word 2003 "styles and formatting" window, the style name appears as
simply "1. Numbered" but if I try to modify the style, it seems to want to
create a new one called "Style Numbered"

any ideas?

I meant that you could modify the List Number style if you wanted to.
However, looking at your initial message, I don't think you need to,
since the style offers exactly what you described: Arabic numbers
followed by a period, and no left indent. If the formatting doesn't
look the way you expect, after you've applied the style, try to press
CTRL+Q, which removes paragraph formatting (including indents and
numbering) not in style.

sorry for the delay, I have been away but I would still like to get to the
bottom of this one if at all possible

Just to make it clear what I am trying to achieve. I fully understand how to
work with styles and how to modify the formatting of lists after they have
been created; I just want to be able to alter the default the formatting
generated by the autoformat feature. For example, on word 2000 or 2003
create a new blank document and type:

here is some text
1. here is a numbered list

After you press return the second time, the numbered list is indented from
the text. The effect I am trying to achieve is that when typing this
sequence the list still be created but not indented.

Thanks again

Andy

I think it should have been clear from our answers that this is not
possible.
