Stopping Messenger Pop Up

I keep getting pop up messages. How do I stop them. I am not that familiar with Outlook. They come from one of two websites. The window that comes up says Messenger at the top

This has nothing to do with Outlook. It is the windows messenger service.
Sounds like you're getting messenger spam.. Do you have high-speed internet
of some kind? Get a firewall, that will prevent it.

Thanks Jason. I read the article. How do I disable WM, as the router and cable modem have a firewall.

I don't believe these pop-up messages you have experienced through has
anything to do with OE. However, on my w2k3 server, I just disable
"Messenger" service and have never seen such a pop-up message.

The router/cable modem firewall is not the same as a software firewall app,
eg Zonealarm etc

Thanks Jason. I read the article. How do I disable WM, as the router and

cable modem have a firewall.

Search for a freeware util named "Shoot the Messenger" - it lets you
enable/disable WM.

Don't be so sure. They may just be doing NAT. Disabling messenger doesn't
cure the underlying problem, which is that your computer/network have ports
open from the Internet. Time for a firewall - either a software firewall
such as ZoneAlarm or Sygate, or the built-in Windows XP firewall if you're
using XP...

Then you still have the underlying problem - what you've done is akin to
taking the batteries out of the smoke detector to stop it from beeping. You
need to protect your computer with a firewall, period - block the ports you
have open right now and you likely won't get hacked.

When the Messenger service is disabled, the computer will no longer listen
to such a request unless there is another program that runs in the
background listening to the request. It is true that the port still widely
opens to the world and only a firewall will block the in intruder as you
said. If you want a better way to protect your computer so that it won't get
hacked, unplug your computer from the Internet and lock it in a safe!

Why need to install another software to disable/enable Messenger if it can
be done through OS services?
