Storing all Word doc's in the same icon in the task bar

E

ETS

When I have many documents open as well as Explorer, email and text files,
there are quite a number of icons in my task bar. So why not collect all word
documents in one word icon (and, for that sake, all excell doc in the same
excel icon and all power point documents in the same power point icon..).
That would make it more tidy.

One step further would be to collect all word documents in the same window
using tabs like in IE7+. I am a bit surprised why this is not already done in
Word 2007. Or is it possible to configure it like that?

This function has been around for donkey's years. [or is that Donkey's ears?]
In Word, Tools, Options, View, Uncheck the Windows in Taskbar box.
Now the next time you start the application, all Word documents will be in
one taskbar 'icon'. Excel and Powerpoint have the same check box as well.

And if you have more items open across your computer than can fit in
the taskbar, they merge into one "icon" per program, and clicking that
"icon" gives a "dropup" listing all the current windows open in that
program. (Vista)

I think probably "popup" (despite its pejorative connotations) is the term
used for menus that pop up. "Dropdown" is limited to dropdowns, and "flyout"
is used for those that open sideways.

I think of popups as things that open in a place disconnected from the
link you click (like popups in web pages). And what would we label the
ones throughout Word that drop up or down depending on their position
relative to the edge of the screen/window?
