Story: Accessing Hotmail via Outlook

Hi!
I thought I would post my adventure with troubleshooting Outlook which
couldn't access Hotmail mailbox.
As I was browsing the net today, suddenly error message poped up. It was
Outlook saying it can't check my Hotmail account because there are problems
with authorization. I had no clue why this happenned so I checked if the
problem might not be at Hotmail. But Outlook Express and web interface seemed
to have no problems logging in and receiving. knowing it is definitely
Outlook related I searched for the error message (800CCC32) and found several
tips how I should handle the problem. I tried retyping username & password,
changing IE settings for privacy and security, tried editing the registry,
nothing worked. Forced to use my brains :) I thought: "If it can't
authenticate it's either sending wrong name/password or not sending them at
all". But howto see what it's actually sending? Ethereal, of course! I ran
Ethereal and sniffed for packets roaming my LAN. I listened to the
communication between my PC and Hotmail server and saw that everything was
going fine untill Hotmail sent authorization request. After that Outlook was
silent. Trying the same with OE, I successfully authorized and had my
messages delivered. I tried polling another of my accounts, they all
authorized without problems. It seemed like the problem is not at server,
neither on the client, but where it could possibly be? then it hit me! Why
didn't I think about that at first! R&R! Restart & reinstall :) I closed
Outlook, opened it again and lo and behold, everything went fine! (Luckily I
didn't have to reinstall Outlook..)
The conclusion being "The easiest solution might be the right one". Or was
it "If everything else fails, restart"?

PS If you experience the same problem, most of the time it's because of
cookie control or the logon settings - try experimenting and finding the one
that works for you (You can find them in IE > Tools > Internet Options >
Security / Privacy)

Was outlook open for more than 24 hours? There is a passport bug that kicks
in after 24 hours and restarting outlook fixes it... for 24 hours. I don't
recall if it was fixed, but check for windows and office updates just to be
sure.

Might be, but I have it open more than 24h quite often. I would say the most
probable cause was that it's Office 12 Outlook, so not all the bugs have been
fixed yet.

then report it in the beta group and file a bug report, don't report it
here.
