Strange behavior of Print dialog

I'm running word 2004, on Panther (10.3.8, but this behaviour has been
for all Panther builds). printing on to hp deskjet 990cxi.
I go to the Paper Type/Quality Dialog, and then to the pull down menu
for Color. Usually, this just has two options: Colorsmart III and
Grayscale. However, when I use with Word 2004, there are also the
additional four options <Bold, Bold Italic, Italic and Regular>. These
are all greyed out and inaccessible, but why are they in the Color
dialog?
But that isn't the problem. Every time I print, a new pair of
Colorsmart III and Grayscale options appears (greyed out) in the menu.
Therefore each time I change from one to the other, I have to scroll
through all these duplicated and useless options. After I've printed
about twenty jobs, I find myself scrolling through more than forty
items. This is really really tedious. Does anybody know how I can stop
this behavior? This only happens with word 2004. No other apps (and I
don't use other parts of Office)

It's difficult to know what is going on here. That panel is not owned by
Word, so I don't really understand why this is only happening in Word.

Here are my suggestions:
In Print Center, delete the printer and readd it. Make sure you are using
the correct driver model.
Try other office apps and as many other non-office apps that you can and
confirm that this is only word (or Office)

Send me the file called 'Printers.conf 'which is located in /etc/cups/ (go
menu in Finder, choose "Go to Folder").

Let me know how that goes,

Thanks,

Rob.

Hi Rob,
Thanks for the prompt reply. I have just updated the printer driver (I
discovered there was an update, and in the process deleted, then added
the printer in the list. However there is no difference. All is still
the same as I described.
And it appears to be only with Word. I tried Excel, Powerpoint, and
lots of other apps, and they are fine. This just happens with Word, and
as it didn't happen with Word X, I suppost it is just Word 2004. I
can't remember if I was using Word 2004 with Jaguar. Probably not.
I'm sending the <printers.conf> file to you separately. By the way,
there is a <printers.conf.O> folder. Would you want that too?

Hello, I wonder if you have had any ideas about this. I looked at the
printers.conf file myself, and didn't see much, but then I don't know
what to look for.
Ray.
