Strange behaviour in cached mode

Hi,

I am seeing some strange behaviour around the interaction between OL2003
clients and an Exch 2000 server. I'd be grateful for some guidance. The
situation is a bit of a corner case but...

We have an office where occasionally the whole office needs to relocate to
some austere accommodation for a two-week period, shutting down all of the
IT equipment in the office. In order to achieve that and to continue to
operate we have virtualised the office server (Win 2k + Exch 2k) onto VMware
server 1.0.4. The OL2003 clients run fine in cached mode against the server
for the most part... except...

We have had a couple of rehearsals where we take down the main server and
copy the vm* files to a portable disk and spin the VM up on a different
workstation in order to confirm that the SOPs are valid. Whilst doing this
we block inbound mail (in order to avoid inconsistency). OL2003 clients
appear to work happily against the temporary instance of the server. When
the trial is finished and the main server is spun up again, we enable
inbound mail. At that point we see an anomaly where OL2003 clients report
they are up to date but their inboxes are not truly synchronised with with
the server (can be seen by either using OWA or temporarily taking a user out
of using cached mode)... The "misbehaved messages" are those that would have
been received during the trial period. New emails flow in just fine.

I guess this is some subtlety in the way that OL2003 clients identify
themselves to servers but I don't know.

I appreciate that all of this might be well outside the approved envelope
but I'd be grateful for some help. Thanks.

Regards
JC
