strange behaviour with personal folder

a user had cleaned up his personal folder (*.pst) and deleted a lot of 'read'
mails. Now whenever Outlook is restartet he's getting a 'not read' receipt
for every deleted mail. after removing the personal folder he gets no more
'not read' receipt but after the personal folder is re-opened the 'not read'
receipt are back again

any ideas how we can fix this?
