Strange characters when printing

Using Word XP (2002) with the latest Service Pack.

When typing, we use the quote symbol (") and when printing it comes out like
an inverted pyramid with tails on the left and top. Any idea what is causing
this and how to fix it?

The font selected is the default Times New Roman that comes with Windows.
(XP Pro)
