strange characters

When I open word I get a few strange looking charactors that apear on the
screen. They don't show up on print, but they are very annoying. I even
reinstalled the program after repair did not work.
Can anyone help? Thank you

Hi EPS,

Try clicking the ¶ symbol on the main toolbar. Does that make a difference? Aside from the fact a new document must contain a
paragraph, represnted by '¶', you wouldn't ordiarily expect to have anything else in a new document. If you do, you've somehow added
them to your 'Normal.dot' template, which you can edit to remove them.
