Strange Characters

I have just opened a Word document and the format seems very strange.
now have dots between every word on the document, right arrow
intermittently in the document & every line ends with what looks like
vertical lines the left of which is made to an upside down "b" - Trie
to paste a document to show an example but it pastes as you woul
normally see.

What you're looking at is all the formatting marks. Go to Tools>Options>View tab> and look and see what’s checked under the Formatting marks. My guess would be all. Are you can just hit the ¶ button on your toolbar.
