"Strange" codes in word documents

J

Jane Ugilt

Somehow I have got some codes in some of my word documents. On the screen
they look like either a big capital I or a big square bracket, both in grey.
They do not appear on the printed document.

I have the feeling that it might be from old Word Perfect documents
converted to Word documents, but I am not sure. It seems like I have pushed a
button to make them appear, but which one? I have tried with Alt+F9 with no
result. Also show/hide does not work on this.

Hi Jane,

They are bookmarks.
Clear Tools | Options... | tab View | Bookmarks to hide 'em.
Experiment a little with Insert | Bookmarks... to see what you can do with
them.

Good luck,
Cooz

What you are describing could be bookmarks. On the Tools menu, click
Options. Click the View tab. Clear the "Bookmarks" option and click
OK.

I have a similar problem trying to hide several anoying brackets and other
formatting instructions which I can't hide except in full screen reading
example : {TOC \ O} and similar
I tried removing languages but without results
Thanks for your suggestions

You only need to press Alt+F9 to display field results instead of field
codes. Alt+F9 toggles field codes on and off.
