Strange error opening doc file

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Power PC

I just finished editing a lengthy doc file and saved it out without problem. But when I went back and tried to re-open it, I got the following error:
"The document name or path is not valid.
Try one or more of the following:
*Check the path to make sure it was typed correctly.
*On the file menu, click open. Search for the file using this dialog box."
Now I'm sitting here staring at the file on my desktop. I've double-clicked it ... I've done File>Open with it ... I've dragged it onto the Word icon in the dock ... in all cases I get the above error.
Leopard is totally up-to-date.
Office:Mac 2008 is totally up-to-date.
Anyone have any suggestions?????

Let's eliminate the obvious...

No "special characters" in the file-name, are there? Nothing but a-z, A -
Z?

Cheers

Just for your information, spaces don't pose a problem in file titles.
