Reproducing this problem will require a WebDAV server to which a Word
subdocument can be stored
Execute the following series of steps:
1) Open a new blank document in Word 2003
2) Select View/Outline
3) Enter some text into a new Heading 1
4) Select File/Save As... and enter a new WebDAV resource HTTP URL in the
"File name" field.
5) When the save is finished, close the document but do *not* exit Word.
6) Open a second new blank document in the same instance of Word
7) Select View/Outline
8) Click the Insert Subdocument button on the Outlining toolbar
9) Enter the WebDAV HTTP URL of the document you saved in step (4)
10) Select File/Save As..., enter a local system file location and click Save.
It is at this point that a strange error message appears. It reads as
follows: "You cannot save while the file is in use by another process. Try
saving the file with a new name. (C:\...\Content.MSO\C1B5F9C.doc)"
I separately reported another problem to do with WebDAV subdocuments being
left locked after the master document is closed. I believe this problem is
related. If I close down that instance of Word, wait three minutes for the
subdocument WebDAV lock to expire, open a new instance of Word and carry out
steps (6) through (10), the save operation completes without error.
My guess is that in addition to the WebDAV subdocument UNLOCK issue, there
is also a contributing HTTP cache problem at work. Has anyone run across this
problem before and is there a work-around short of closing the document
without saving and starting again from scratch after a few minutes?
