Strange Excel Problem (not printing): Excel 2004 & Leopard

A

Hi -

I'm new here, and I'm happy to see a forum like this around - this is the
first time I've stumbled on it.

I recently installed Leopard, and I'm waiting until Office 2008 comes to our
campus (i'm a staff member at UT). In the meantime, Excel is acting really
strangely, including behavior like no longer allowing me to type directly in
a cell until i double-click inside it. I haven't changed anything in the
preferences or unchecked the box allowing one to edit in a cell directly.
Previously I could click on a cell, start typing, and it would register my
text - no longer.

Quitting and re-opening doesn't seem to help. I'm on Excel 11.3.6 and Mac OS
10.5.1.

Thanks for any help,

Aliza

First thing to try is to download the latest updates. Have you added any
haxies of other software that captures keystrokes?

Thanks for your response, Bob.

I looked at the other updates, but they describe themselves as pertaining to
Word, so i didn't think they would make a difference.

I haven't added any haxies at all, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I also forgot to add that the problem is intermittent. Sometimes typing in
teh cell works fine, other times it makes me double-click. I've shut down
completely and restarted at different times to see if that changed teh issue,
but that doesn't seem to affect it.

Are we talking about printing, or typing in a cell? Is Edit directly in cell
checked in the preferences? What am I trying to solve?

Yes, typing in a cell, as i said. I'm not trying to print anything, just type
in the cells of a spreadsheet without having to double-click first. "Edit
directly in cell" is checked in preferences.

The Edit directly in cell preference means that you double click to enter
data. If you want to only select the cell, then you are editing in the
formula bar. What is happening that you feel is incorrect?

Generally, I only need to select a cell and begin typing for it to register
my data:
- Click on the cell to select it,
- begin typing,
- see the keystrokes in the cell. No need to double-click.

Since installing Leopard, at times, that interaction has changed such that I
click on a cell, begin typing, and nothing happens - no data appears in teh
cell. At those times, if i double-click on the cell and type it will show my
data, but in the past I have not needed to do that.

If you click on a cell and nothing happens when you type, then something is
fishy. If you have the preference set to edit directly in cell, you MUST
double click on the cell to expose it to editing. Otherwise you will be
editing in the formula bar. I can't imagine what may be causing "nothing to
happen" when you start typing. Is the cell's font color set to white and the
formula bar hidden?

In fact, I never use the formula bar. I always type directly into the cells,
and I haven't changed the "Edit directly in the cell" checkbox in the
preferences - I've always had that checked.

The text is set to black, and as I mentioned, I do see it when I double-click
and then type into the cell. Interestingly, since starting this thread this
morning, I haven't been having the problem. I can click in the cell, type in
it, see what I've typed, and everything is fine.

I have no idea why that is working intermittently now, but at least it's
working for the moment.

Thanks for your help in trying to troubleshoot. It's definitely a strange
issue...
