Strange formatting in sent emails

I have html formatting turned off and yet my sent emails have strange line
spacing with > or >> at the beginning of each line. I never hit ENTER at the
end of a sentence so my text should wrap. Any help would be appreciated.

The marks (>,>>) are quote marks to show attribution. As you can see your
previous message has one quote mark to show I'm replying to your text.

Under preferences --> View, you can even customize the colors, but I suggest
leaving them alone.
