Strange formatting problem

Stephen Glynn

For reasons I don't quite understand and can't replicate I somehow managed
to cut and paste some figures from a UK government website into an Excel
2000 workbook as text rather than as numbers.

This obviously gave me a series of #VALUE errors for the results of various
formulae that depended on the numbers I'd pasted in.

My problem was that I couldn't reformat the values I'd pasted in.
Eventually my workround was to "Clear Contents" for the cells in question,
reformat the cells as numbers and enter the values manually. It's working
fine now (and I can cut and paste new values in from the same website
without any problems).

It's happened a couple of times before.

Anyone got any idea where I went wrong? It's not a big deal but it's a bit
puzzling and irritating.
