Strange handling of hyperlinks

Hi all,

Another question from someone new to Mac and Office for Mac. I like to create hyperlinks between different documents that reside in different folders. The problem comes in when I try to link FROM a document in a subdirectory TO a document in a higher-level directory, or to a document in a different subdirectory of that higher-level directory. For example:

File containing the link:

file://localhost/users/myusername/Documents/SubDir1/SubSubDir1/document1.docx

File to be linked to:

file://localhost/users/myusername/Documents/SubDir1/document2.docx

So I insert a hyperlink into document1, and choose document2 from the "Select..." dialog. However, in the "Link to:" window in the dialog, the link does NOT back up to the higher-level directory. It should read: "../document2.docx", but instead it reads simply "document2.docx", as if both documents were in the same folder.

The problem is worse when I try to link to a file in a "cousin" directory, for example:

file://localhost/users/myusername/Documents/SubDir1/SubSubDir2/document3.docx

Then I actually get a link that looks like this:

file://localhost/users/myusername/Documents/SubDir1/SubDir2/SubSubDir2/document3.docx

What seems to be happening is that Word is not "allowing" me to link to a higher-level directory (unless, that is, I manually type in "../../"myself).

Does anyone have any ideas about this? I have hundreds of documents, all liberally hyperlinked, and many of these links are not working now. Thanks!

The only idea I can give you is that hyperlinking is fairly broken in Word
2008.

If I were you, I would use "Send Feedback" to let Microsoft know that you
want it fixed.

In the meantime, OS X contains the Apache web server. If I were you, I
would start it up, and start publishing your documents to it as real HTML
web pages. Somehow, I think you will get a much more reliable result.
Half the websites in the world are running on Apache :)

Cheers
