Strange pasting behavior in Word 2004

When I try to copy and paste text between Word 2004 and Apple's Mail
program, the text does not get pasted into Mail. Also, when I open a
..jpg and copy and paste it into Word, the image does not get pasted
unless I choose Paste Special. Neither of these issues occurred before
I updated Word to its most recent version a few weeks ago.

I tried to repeat your problems here without success.
I can paste Word's (11.3.3) copy into Mail, both in plain text and rich
text mode, although the font is not copied from Word while in rich text
mode.
I can copy from GraphicConverter and paste into Word (I didn't know you
could do that; it is most useful for snagging a small portion of an
image.)

You might try copying images from other applications before pasting
into Word. How about confirming you can paste images into other than
Word? That might help you troubleshoot the image problem.

For pasting text, again, try something other than Mail and Word in each
direction. TextEdit would be a good testing tool.

Report back when you have confirmed that your problems stick with Word.

I've checked again, and these problems do still stick. Interestingly,
I'm running the same version of Word (11.3 (061213) ) on both my Power
PC G5 (where the problem persists, having never been an issue before)
and on my MacBook where Word is working fine (I can copy text into Mail
and I can copy/paste .jpg's).

OK. I was trying to get you to run an experiment to see whether you
have a copy paste problem over your whole Mac, or whether the problem
only occurs when Word is either the destination or the source of the
pasted material.
