Strange Sizing Problem

Excel 11.3/060914
OS 10.4.8

Let's see if I can explain this clearly:

I have two different Excel files open at the same time on my screen:

The first, which is over a year old, is displayed at 100%. When I size a
column to, say, 6 inches wide, it measures (with a ruler) approximately 6
inches wide. (All my new files seem to behave this way too.)

A second, newer file behaves differently. I display it at 100% zoom, assign
a column width of "6 inches", but it actually measures nearly 8 inches.

Other brand new files seem to behave "properly"... ie 6 inches is 6 inches.

One interesting comments:

I have two monitors in mirror mode (a 15 powerbook and a 17 inch Samsung.)
I am basing my measurements in the description above on the 17 inch external
monitor. (on the PB monitor, everything scales down proportionately, but the
problem file 6 inches DOES NOT measure 6 inches (closer to 6.5))

The "problem" file has been edited by several other people on Windows
machines. As far as I know, my other files have not.

I'm hoping the verdict is not "corruption" on this one file, as I would have
lots of formatting to redo. I have copied a sheet from the "problem" file
into a known good file, and the problem persists for that sheet.

After reading several; HELP entries, I made this observation, which seems to
be a relevant clue:

When I stretch the columns, there are 2 numbers that show up in the "screen
tips" The first (character units) is different between the good and bad
files. The second (inches) is the same. For example, two default width
columns read as follows: "Width: 10.00 (0.65 inches)" vs. "Width: 10.00
(0.90 inches)" (The latter example is a "good" file.) The default
measurement units and font/size are the same for all files (in prefs).

Thanks for any help in remedying this!

The difference is probably fonts. Excel's width measurement is in points of
the default (normal style font). Also force both sheets through page setup
and print preview. The windows edited sheet may have some residual windows
font issues that should be cleared out when previewed on the mac.

Thanks Bob. The Page Setup/Print Preview routine worked.
