strange start-up behaviour

I am reposting this question ... still hope for some help.

Hi,
I have had a problem with outlook 2003-SP2 (in win xp) for quite some time
now and it is becoming very annoying. This is what happens.

When I open outlook I get a dialog on screen saying "The file
C:\...\outlook.pst (outlook.pst is my main pst file where all mail is
delivered) is in use and could not be accessed. Close any application that is
using this file, and then try again" The dialog title is SetPoint. I just
click away this dialog and (after entering my password)outlook works fine
except for two things 1) the adressbook is not available and 2) forms cannot
be accessed.

If I close outlook it is automatically restarting itself and this second
time around the adressbook and forms are available. It seems to me that
outlook is trying to open outlook.pst two times every time I open outlook.

In addition it seems that the outlook.exe is never closed when I exit the
application. I have to close by ending the process (in task manager) to
really close outlook fully.

Also, I should say that the outlook.pst was originally created on another
computer and moved to the current place. I have changed the location of this
file in the control panel (mail setup) and all paths are to the correct
location.

I would be grateful for any assistance because I have been putting up with
this for a looong time now.

Thanks.

Thanks for reply. I have tried this before and disabled the add-ins etc but
it does not solve the problem. The problem I have started when I moved my pst
file from another computer to the one I use now. Also, I don't consider the
fact that outlook doesn't close to be a big problem. The BIG problem is this
loop of outlook reopening itself.

My guess is that you are running an application that relies on Outlook and
loads at startup.

You're mixing symptoms and issues here. I believe your true issue is that
Outlook isn't closing properly caused by another application or a
missconfiguration which results in restarts of Outlook.

When you start your computer and leave it idle for a few minutes (10 should
do) does Task Manager show outlook.exe running? If so you have a startup
application launching Outlook automatically which is most likely the cause
of your issues.

Hmm, not so easy to explain this apparently.

When I start my computer outlook is NOT launched. When I launch outlook, the
first dialog I see is my password and then I get the message "The file ...pst
is in use and cannot be accessed". This is a message I usually ignore since I
can use outlook (but without my adressbook). If I now close outlook
(file|exit) it will restart in about 5 seconds and I get the password dialog
again but WITHOUT the message about my pst file already in use. This second
time my adressbook is available. If I close outlook again (the second close)
it will NOT relaunch again by asking me for the password. However,
outlook.exe is still a running process.

What method did you initially used to move your pst-file? Sounds like you've
damaged your mail profile that way. See if recreating it solves it;

Hi again,

Now, I have tried your suggestion but I'm afraid it is not the solution. I
created an additional profile so that I have two. I made the new one the
default and told outlook to ask for the profile at startup. Now I get the
select profile dialog two times but when selecting the profile in the second
dialog outlook crashes. When I start outlook again it works fine i.e. the
select profile dialog only appears once and outlook seems to be ok as far as
I can see. After every restart of the computer I get the profile dialog twice
and outlook crashes.
