Strange Word Document Issue

I have a couple users where whenever they open a word document they
have created the system tries to connect to instance of the network
server volumes even though the file has been created and saved locally
to the desktop or user's documents folder.

Is this something to do with document template corruption? I have tried
replacing the user templates with the ones I originally created - a new
document from one of the templates generated the same issue though only
trying to connect one network server volume instance!

I've also tried setting up a new user on the machines - thinking it may
have something to do with corrupt program preferences - without any
joy.

Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this and how I might be
able to rectify the issue?

I'm thinking this is because if the template that the document was based on
is on the server, Word will try to find that template when it opens the doc.

If in the local document, you go to Tools | Templates and Add-ins, and
"automatically update document styles" is checked, for instance, Word will
find the original template, check if the styles have changed, and update the
definitions/appearance in the local doc.

I am not sure whether unchecking that box will prevent Word looking for the
base template. I don't think so, though it may be worth a try.

Word will *always* open the "attached template" when opening the document
regardless of what checkbox is on/off. Verify this in the "Tools | Template
& Add-ins..." dialog.

If you don't want the Template on the network to be opened, then either
attach a local copy of the template or use "Normal". However this negates
any benefit that having the template linked provides (such as updating
styles, autocorrect, toolbars and macros) that can be updated on the server
copy.

Thanks for your replies guys. Unfortunately your suggestions haven't
managed to resolve the issue. The templates are stored locally on the
computer and the resulting documents are being saved locally - I just
can't work out why opening the documents should initiate multiple
network volume logons! The only thing I can think of doing is to
uninstall and reinstall Microsoft Office - already having run
diagnostic tools and repaired disk permissions. Are there any
guidelines for completely clearing the Office suite from the hard
drive, before carrying out the reinstallation?

Did you try, for instance, attaching a different template temporarily and
then re-attaching the right local template. Possibly clearing the settings
and resetting them might help, but that's just a wild guess.

Anyhow, Beth gave you the guidelines on Remove and Reinstall.

Thanks for all your help everyone. Removing the Office installation and
reinstalling it seems to have resolved the issue. I'll have to keep an
eye on it just in case the problem resurfaces.
Thanks again.
