Is there a way of creating striped backgounds for a smart art or other
graphic; I am not referring to a gradiant background, but a background that
alternates between two (or more) colors - like a zebra.
thank you

I think the closest that Word can do is Pattern that can be found under Fill
Effects, where you can choose the two colurs that do the strips. For anything
more complex, ie changing the angle or the width of the strips, Word cannot
do this.
You could design exactly what you want in say PowerPoint, save as JPG and
attach this in the object as a picture fill (same dialog as Pattern.
Hope this helps

Dean,
Thank you for the reply. You say that I can work with stripes in PowerPoint.
Yet I do not see where stripes are an option in PowerPoint. Please explain.
Than you.

MZ, what I said was that you could "design" your own strips in PowerPoint,
that is draw your own design, using the basic tools, i.e. Line, Shapes, etc.
Then saves As JPG, then use as a Fill.
If you really want a Zebra pattern, find a photo of a Zebra on the interweb,
download a JPG or some such file format, and use as a Fill.
All the best
