Struggling with Footers and Page Numbers in Word 2000

S

Steve

Before I go bald (from pulling my hair out), I'm hoping
there's some expertise here that can help me with footers
and page numbers in Word.

I've got a report with 16 enclosures. Each enclosure has
a title page preceeding it. For enclosure 1, I would like
a footer that says Enclosure 1 at the bottom of that
enclosure's title page as well as the text of the
enclosure. I would like enclosure 1 to be page numbered,
starting with page #1 on the first page of the enclosure's
text (note: I do not want a page number on the title page
of the enclosure).

For enclosure 2, I would like the same thing -
an "enclosure 2" footer and page numbering starting with
page #1 on the first page of enclosure 2's text (not on
the enclosure 2 title page).

So on and so on, I want it to be for each of my 16
enclosures.

I'm fairly good with Word but this is driving me nuts. I
went in and put in 32 section breaks so each enclosure's
title page was it's own section (because I forgot to
mention, it is vertically centered), and so each
enclosure's text can have its own section.

My difficulty basically lies with Word defaulting to "Same
as Previous" for headers and footers - is there a way to
change this default?

I fought through the "previous" feature and got all my
footers on as desired. Then I went to enclosure 1,
started inserting page numbers, and the dang footers
started defaulting to "same as previous" again.

If anyone can offer me some advice on perhaps the best
approach to setting something like this up to avoid the
problems I'm having, I would be most grateful.

It's nearing the end of my workday for today, but I'll be
back in the morning to fight with this document some more.

If you turn off Same as Previous when you insert the first section break,
then any others you insert after it should also be unlinked.

FWIW, I wouldn't make a separate section for each title page. Exact vertical
centering is rarely visually attractive, so it's hardly worth the effort of
a separate section just for this alignment. I deal with appendixes of this
sort a good bit, and I find it preferable to have an Appendix Number style
that has enough Space Before to place it attractively on the page, followed
by the Appendix Title. This also ensures that the first line of text on the
page will be at the same position even if what follows runs to a different
number of lines.

To take care of the numbering, use the "Different first page" option so that
don't have to have a page number on the title page (put the number in the
primary Footer and omit it from the First Page Footer). Set the page
numbering to start at 0, and the first page of your text will be 1.

Another shortcut you may find helpful: If your title page says "Enclosure 1"
anywhere on it, apply a unique style to that text so that you can use a
StyleRef field in your footers and not have to change the text from one
footer to the next.

In addition to Suzanne's excellent advice, I would add
that if you're in the middle of footer problems in a
document like yours with lots of sections, it is helpful
to start at the bottom (rather than top) of your
document, turning Same As Previous off in each section,
getting it the way you want it and then moving to the
previous section to do the same thing until you're done.

Thanks for the tips Suzanne and Sara.

As far as the Enclosure sheets being separate sections,
it's a "requirement" to have them that way. Oh well.

Thanks again,

I wasn't suggesting that each enclosure shouldn't be a separate section,
only that the title page shouldn't require a separate section.

Unfortunately, it would appear that you are right. <sigh>
