Stuck in strange cursor mode

Hi,
when opening one of my Office X workbooks in 2008 I don't get the cross
shaped mouse cursor but one that looks like a box with triangles in two
corners. It doesn't allow selecting cells and behaves generally weird...
How to get back to normal?
