I have equipped my granddaughter with a new laptop for college. She will not
be at school for 6 weeks. She needs to use Office til then.

I have proposed to install 60 day trial until school, when she can purchase
academic verison.

How should she update from trial to academic when she ghets it?

Hello RP

You can do that but i would i like to tell you that you can convert the
trial version into the full version at any time in or after 60 Days however
it will depend upon the trial you had installed and the full version you will
buy.
For e.g The trial you installed is for office 2007 Ultimate and the full
version you will buy is for Home and Student than you need to completely
uninstall the trial version and then install the full version.
you can use the following link to uninstall the trial or Previous version
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218
And you can check which version of office trial you have installed so that
whether you can directly convert it or not,
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928116
I would suggest you to follow the first link to uninstall the previous
version and then install the full version.
Hope that it will resolve the issue.

If you DO decide to convert the trial version as in Rahul's reply, then you
MUST save the file(s) you downloaded to install onto some sort of removable
media like DVD, with a notepad file containing the Product key.

Best way to do this is to remove the Trial and the Activation assistant and then
install Office cleanly. This way you will avoid many issues and have a excellent
running Office.

After removal it is advisable to reboot and to disable your Anti Virus until
installation is complete

If you have trouble to remove the Trial and the Activation Assistant then see the
following

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218

Again doing it another way like using the Trial and activating it with the Retail
version of any Office will cause some issues. Some minor and some more major. We
also see this issue daily here in the Office newsgroups when Trial is converted to
full versions.
