style and formatting

When clicking the New Style button in the Styles and
Formatting task pane, the New Style dialog box which pops
up does not display the Underline Button nor the Font
Color button. What's the deal?

Good question. It had both those buttons for me regardless of which kind of
style I selected. Have you tried running Detect and Repair from the Help
menu?
