style conflict for hyperlinks

Word 2002, OL 2002 SP3 - Word as html/rich text editor in OL
Win XP HE SP1

Follow-up to: microsoft.public.outlook

I seem to have a conflict of styles.

I created a style "hyperlink-small" which uses a different, lower size
and color font as the default "Hyperlink" style in Word (default is
Times New Roman, 12 pts, Underlined Blue.)

Whether I create that custom style based on the default "Hyperlink"
where it becomes "Hyperlink+......"; OR I create a brand new style NOT
cascading from default Hyperlink, it does not stick as formatting in my
OL emails' signature, etc., as for some reason, any hyperlink created in
signature seemed to be taken over by the default "hyperlink" i.e. Times
New Roman 12 Pts, etc.

This could be cause perhaps by precedence of Word reading there is a
hyperlink thus should automatically be default hyperlink as opposed to
custom style.

Can that be resolved--by perhaps changing precedence of style, or any
other way?

Tx.

I might have resolved my own problem: I created a new PARAGRAPH style as
opposed to CHARACTER style; and defined the font, size color and
underscore there.

So far, it works and is stable without the default 'Hyperlink" style
taking over.
I don't know if this is the proper way to go but it seems to work.

I'd appreciate any comments from the experts as far as proper
procedure--if what i did was correct; or is there a better more
"standard" way to do it?

Tx a lot.

Hi Stef,

Why don't you simply modify the Hyperlink style the way you want it?

Rather than creating a new hyperlink style, have you tried modifying
the built-in Hyperlink and FollowedHyperlink styles so that they look
the way you want them to? However, although this would give you the
desired formatting in Word, I'm not sure if/how it affects the display
of hyperlinks in Outlook.

Hi Stefan and Klaus:

Tx for your replies--which essentially suggest the same way of proceeding.

The problem with ur suggestion (which I had tried before posting here)
is that I think it creates a conflict of precedence of a style of Word
(Hyperlink) over the modified hyperlink style that I would create which
cascades down from the Hyperlink--thus less precedence (it seems to me.)

Word sees a hyperlink in the signature and applies the "Hyperlink" style
to it BEFORE applying the "modified Hyperlink" style to it. It's a
parent/child cascading relationship which--I believe--creates this
conflict that I could only resolve with a custom paragraph style that
applies the style I want, as a parent i.e. NOT cascading from another style.

My solution is working well. I am having no problems with it and the
new style I created "sticks" in OL signatures.

Again, I am not sure I did it the right way--creating a new paragraph
style to do it, but it is not creating any conflicts and is sticking.

I'm glad you've found a solution that works. Just one more comment:
The FollowedHyperlink style controls the formatting (in Word) of a
clicked hyperlink; the Hyperlink style controls the formatting of
un-used links. You can change the font formatting of either of them
(or both).

Stefan,
I realize that. Tx.
