Style formatting dissappearing even after save

We've several documents that we are having difficulty with losing formatting:
1. start with a freshly created template (sometimes will pull previously
created but new document)
2. import information, sometimes through cut and paste.
3. Clear style formatting.
4. Apply new style format.
5 save document.
6. When open again, doc reverts back to original.

How do we get the style changes to stick?

It sounds like those document might have Automatically Update enabled. If
this is Word 2003, try Tools - Templates and Add-ins, and make sure
Automatically update document styles is NOT checked.

If this is Word 2007, click the Developer tab, then click Document Template.

(If the Developer tab isn't showing, click Office button - Word Options -
Popular tab, and click Show Developer tab...)
