Hi John:
First I will tell you not to do it, then I will tell you how
A Word document is a very complex structure. The fundamental unit is the
paragraph, and each paragraph has a style. So the styles are very important
parts of the internal structure.
Word has a set of styles named the "Built-In Styles". These must exist in
every document or the document structure collapses and Word cannot read the
file. For that reason, you cannot re-name this set of styles.
You can rename any other styles you like using the Organiser tool which you
can look up in the help.
For the built-in styles, you cannot "remove" their given names, but you can
add aliases of your own. This is what will happen if you attempt to rename
such a style. You usually see this on Heading styles: Heading 1 can have
the "H1" alias added: it's name would then become "Heading 1, H1." You can
add as many names as you like: I have seen a style with ten different names
all in a line.
But I still caution you that it is a bad idea to re-name or add aliases to
the Built-in Styles. It can lead to document corruption problems, and it
will indeed lead to strange useability problems in a corporate workgroup.
I consider it much better to rename your non-built-in styles, and to create
your own styles to replace the built-in styles if you do not like the names.
Just because the built-in styles must exist, does not mean that they have to
be in use.
However, you will have a long and happy life with Word if you learn to use
the built-in styles wherever possible. This has flow-on benefits as your
Word usage gets more complex and your documents get longer. Not the least
of which is that anyone in the company can pick up a document created by you
and know which styles to use where.
Hope this helps
