Style problem

M

Molly

I am having extraordinary difficulty in setting a style that gives me the
format that I want. Can someone give me step-by-step instructions in
creating a style in 2007 that will do this: I. Begin typing

A. Begin typing

1. Begin typing etc
I would like the Roman numeral, cap letter, number - whatever I choose as my
top level to be flush with the left hand margin. I want the numeral, etc. to
be followed by a period and then a double space. Same for all the rest of
the levels. Spacing will be single space - I'll put in the doubles where
needed.

When I try to set a style, the top level immediately indents itself! I am
Word incompetent so I really need very explicit instructions.

Thanks.

You need to set up both paragraph styles and a multilevel list.

Use Word's built in headings styles 1 to 3 (or more as you need, up to
heading 9). Leave them all left aligned, and set the font, size, etc. as you
prefer. Apply these styles to headings in your document.

With your cursor in the first heading 1 in the document, look for the
paragraph group on the home tab and click the little arrow next to the
multilevel list icon. There in the list library is a list scheme that is very
likely what you want (I., A., 1.). It is already linked to the built-in
headings styles. Click it. All of headings in your document should be
numbered and indented appropriately.

Now, you can fix the space after the list number. With the cursor still in
that first heading 1, click the miltilevel list icon again and then "Define
new multilevel list".

In the next dialog, click "more" so you can see all the choices. Click the
first number level modify it, though it's probably already selected. Put
the cursor in the box after "enter formatting for number". Press Ctrl+Shft+
[space] to place a no break space. In the drop-down menu after "Follow
number with", choose space. Do this for each numbering level you are using.
When done, click OK.

If your numbered paragraphs are not headings, write back.

For more information about setting up multilevel lists, see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html. It
describes W2003's outline lists but once you are in the setup dialog, the
method is the same.
