Style problem

Hi everyone,

I had previously created a whole heap of styles in Word using a font
called Adobe Garamond. I've since had to go back into the styles and
change this font from Adobe Garamond to just regular garamond. I had to
modify each of the individual styles to do this.

After closing the style dialogue box, all the styles seemed to update,
but then when I save the file, close it, and then reopen it, all the
styles revert back to what they were before I'd made the font
modification, ie. they changed back to Adobe Garamond.

Can someone tell me if this is a sign of a corrupt document or perhaps
I changed a style that should have been left alone?

If anyone has any clues as to why this might have happened and how I
can fix it, I'd really appreciate it.

You forgot to check the "Add to Template" box when you made your change to
the styles, and you've left Tools>Templates and
Add-ins>Attach..."Automatically update styles on open..." switched ON.

The first means that although you changed the styles in the DOCUMENT, you
have not changed the styles in its template.

The second means that each time you open the document, it overwrites its
internal styles with those from the attached template (which may be the
Normal template...)

Hope this helps

Actually I have another question if that's alright:

I have all my styles in a template now but I've also noticed that some
of the styles, eg. the footer or the footnote text - even though they
appear when I look in the format > styles dialogue box, they don't
appear in the pulldown menu in the formatting toolbar. Is there a
reason for this?

Thanks again
Yes, there is a reason for that. It's a mistake :) They were rushing to
get the thing finished for their on-sale date and someone made an error
filling in a list of styles. Could have happened to any of us...

Note: The list of styles that are visible responds to the setting you make
in the "List" box in the "Styles" section of the Formatting Palette. If you
have that box set to "Available Styles", you will see only the styles that
have been used in the document. Until you use a style, it won't appear.

If you set it to "All Styles" you will see a much larger selection of styles
from the template.

There are two bugs in the mechanism: the first is a Design Bug:

"Available Styles" will show you styles if they have EVER been used in the
document, regardless of whether or not there is currently any text in the
document with that style.

The second bug was the "mistake": "All Styles" shows you almost all of the
styles in the template, but there are a few missing.

Hope this helps

Thanks a million John - that solved the problem!!
