Style shading reproduced by Page Break

I use styled sub-headings that include paragraph shading; when these headings
appear after a manual page break, the shading is produced along the page
break line and also prints.

As a sub-heading, I need the style to repeat within the page, not "page
break before".

Is there a way to prevent the shading from being reproduced at page breaks?

Thanks

Yes. Don't use page breaks! Literally :)

When you use a page break immediately before a paragraph, the page break
becomes part of the paragraph and takes on its formatting properties.

To avoid this, remove the page breaks from your document.

Now, start from the front and look for the first heading you want to go to
the next page.

Select the heading, and all the paragraphs between it and the bottom of the
page.

Right click and use Format>Paragraph>Line and Page Breaks>Keep with next.
This will cause Word to move the heading and all its following text to the
following page. It's better than using page breaks, because you do not need
to do anything if the document text changes: the heading will always stay on
the same page as its following paragraphs.

Note: this setting will not work if you have Widow/Orphan turned on or "Keep
lines together turned off. Without Keep lines together, Word can split the
paragraph at the bottom of the page, which means it won't skip the heading
to the top of the next page.

You can record a macro to set these properties with a single click, and put
it on your toolbar.

You should define the Keep With Next property into the style for all your
headings: this way you will only have to intervene half as often because
Word will get it right most of the time automatically.

This technique is better than using the "Page Break Before" property because
that requires you to go and move all the page breaks each time you change
the text before them. This way you do it once and it stays right :)

Cheers

FWIW, Word's built-in Headings 1-4 are formatted as "Keep with next" by
default.
