Style Sheets

I have set up style sheets, I am trying to format a
paragraph from one style to another and it won't let me.
I select the paragraph, then go to style and select the
style I want, then I click apply and it won't change to
the new style.

Any ideas?

What version of Word are we discussing?

Is the currently applied style a paragraph style? Or perhaps
a character style? Or even direct formatting?
