StyleRef formatting issues for auto-generated headers

I am having issues when a styleref field refers to an automatically-generated
Bibliography heading, it inserts a "<" (less than symbol) and sometimes extra
spaces before the word(s) "Bibliography" or "Works Cited".

Also, on a different but related note, the StyleRef doesn't seem to pick up
the TOC heading and will just go and display the heading from the last
Heading 1 style instead of "Content" or "Table of Contents".

Any help with either issue would be really appreciated!

When you are using the bibliography feature, Word places the bibliography
and its heading inside a content control. It seems as if the STYLEREF field
cannot correctly read the text from inside content controls.

What you can do is the following: Cut the heading and the Bibliography field
and paste it outside the content control. Then delete the control. Note that
you may want to display field codes (for example by pressing Alt+F9) before
cutting and pasting; that makes the task easier.

Alternatively, separate the main body of the document from the bibliography
by inserting a section break, unlink headers (footers) and then manually
type "Bibliography" (or "Works Cited," whichever is appropriate for your
document) in the header (or footer).

For the table of contents, you can proceed in a similar fashion. Note that
the heading for the TOC is not formatted in the Heading 1 style, so you will
have to use a section break even if you choose to use a STYLEREF field to
get the text.

Thanks Stefan-
I used section breaks which seem to work ok. I needed it done pretty fast
and since there are only about a dozen sections or so it wasn't that bad.
I'll definitely try out the other approach later though.

Hi Dan,

Stefan covered some methods that will work, especially the 2nd issue you mentioned on Table of Content (TOC) with {StyleRef}.

For the Bibliography issue it may be that it's not an issue with Content Controls in general (the Bibliography gallery entries
include a content control, rather than just the Bibliography field, but rather it seems there's a goof in the MS provided built in
'Bibliography' entry in Word's 'built in' category within the 'Bibliography Gallery' that puts a 'less than' character at the
beginning of the string in the StyleRef field.

Manually creating a Bibliography using just the {Bibliography Field} from
Insert=>Quick Parts=>Field, creates the same problem in the {StyleRef} in the header does not create the problem, but then saving
that entry to the Bibliography gallery, without a header paragraph, recreates the problem when that gallery entry is next used.

From the Built-in Bibliography gallery entries, if you use the Works Cited choice to insert the bibliography and don't get the stray
&lt character "<", then, try typing "Bibliography" over the 'Works Cited' in the title of the inserted entry, then select the
Content control (blue frame) of the bibliography by clicking on the 'handle' on the top left of the frame, return to the
Bibliography gallery and use the 'Save Selection' to the Bibliography gallery you can either replace the existing 'Bibliography'
entry in the 'built-in' category or give your entry a new name and save it and then test in a new document to see if you get the
same problem.


By the way, can you describe the scenario where you're using {StyleRef Bibliography} in a page heading? The Bibliography entries
are each in a separate paragraph so that can be alot of different text at the top of each page, especially if you have a lot of
sources. <g>.
