StyleRef "Heading1" in Text Box not working

I

Irv Rollman

I am familiar with using the StyleRef "Heading1" field in
the header to pick up the current chapter at the top of
the page in the header text. However, I'm creating a
document in Landscape mode, and I want the current
Heading1 text to appear sideways on the right edge (so
you can see Chapter headings while just flipping thru the
pages).

I created a Text Box in the header at the side of the
page, rotated the text, and inserted the
StyleRef "Heading1" field. However, it picks up the
Heading1 from the first occurance of the style in the
document, not from the current page.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Try using a frame or floating table instead of a text box and see if that
helps. It may well not, though.

That does not seem to work, you are right.

Is there a way to have a recurring text box on a page
without putting it in the header/footer, and without re-
inserting it on every page?

It's odd that the same thing that would work in a plain text header would
not work in a frame or table anchored to the header, but there you are.

I've used this in Word 97 (for landscape sections with headers), and it
worked for me then, even with textboxes ...

Irv, since you have to do some "manual" formatting in this section
anyway: What happens if you apply an empty character style over the
Heading you wish to appear in the landscaped header and point your
STYLEREF field to that?

I *think* I tried it, but not sure. Can you be a little
more specific on how? Or any other suggestions you might
have, or maybe forward to me an example doc you did?
(BTW, this is Word 2002.)

I'm having only Word 2000 here, but I can make it work with Frames (not
with Textboxes, hmmm... hard to think that this would have changed from
Word 97, maybe I used Frames then, I guess :)).

Setup a new document, landscape mode, only one section and header.

Insert a textbox in the header, move it to the short side of the page.
Insert two fields: { STYLEREF 2 } and { PAGE }.

Back in the main body, insert rand(,)-text to make it multipage.

Insert a couple of dummy sample lines throughout the document and
marking them as "Heading 2".

I can confirm your observation: It shows the very first H2 on every
page. Now, convert the textbox to a frame. Works here as expected.

Good luck!

Bob,

You are brilliant, even more so than me! Converting the
text box to a frame did the trick, although for the life
of me, I can't understand why.

Thanks!

In general, Word can't "see" text in text boxes, which is why my initial
reply to your post suggested using a frame instead of a text box.
