STYLEREF in header

B

briank

I am attempting to link my table of contents into my header. So far the TOC
appears to be working just fine using Header 1. However when I use the term
{ STYLEREF "Heading 1" } in my header I am not seeing the actual chapter name
as located in my TOC. In fact I am viewing a gray out term: { STYLEREF
"Heading 1" } in my document.

Any thoughts on what I am missing here?

You only need to toggle field codes. To do this, press Alt+F9.

Fields can be in two modes: they can show the result, i.e. the content that
will print, or they can show the code behind. Alt+F9 toggles field codes on
and off.

Sounds like you have field codes displayed. Press Alt-F9 to go back to
displaying field results.

I do not think that I am viewing field codes here. For when I toggle over
(Alt-F9) I view the term {STYLEREF "Heading 1"} {PAGE}. Prior to toggling I
view the term {STYLEREF "Heading 1"} 2. Does this help in narrowing down the
issue?

Press Alt+F9 once more. You were viewing field codes of the StyleRef field
only. Therefore, you need to press Alt+F9 again. The first time, the field
codes of alle fields will be shown. The second time, all field codes will be
hidden.

The reason why only your StyleRef field showed field codes may be that you
had just created the field. Normally, if you type a field manually, you only
need to press F9 to toggle and update that field.

If you click in a field and press Shift+F9, you toggle the field codes of
only that field.

Perhaps I am still missing something basic and obvious but I have pressed Alt
F9 more than a few times and I still look at the term {STYLEREF "Heading 1"}
in the header of my document. Any thoughts?

Then you have typed {STYLEREF "Heading 1"} from the keyboard when it is
supposed to be a field.
Select STYLEREF "Heading 1" and press CTRL+F9 to make it into a field.
Delete the unwanted typed brackets {} then update the field (F9) and you
should be able to toggle the display normally.

Thank everyone for the help. Works perfectly.
