Styles and Formatting

Hello All,

I have encountered three perplexing issues while using word to prepare a
document and would like some assistance in their resolution. First, in a
word document that was the combination of three subdocument, I have
encountered inconsistent formatting throughout such as "12 pt, not all caps,"
or "style, body text + line spacing: single (or double)," or "style, 12 pt
not all caps 1," or some other style. (I think this issue pertains to
"direct formatting vs. style formating, but not sure) How and when do I
harmonize these styles?

Second, when I activate a "style" that is recommended by word, particularly
"style 1" to some text, it (text) disappears from the page layout view, but
is visible in the "show" paragraph mark w/ page layout view. What is
happening and how do I resolve this issue?

Third, there is text in the "show paragraph mark w/ page layout view" that
is UPPER CASE and invisible in the page layout view. However, the same text
is lower case and visible in page layout view. Why the difference and how
can I rectify this issue?

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Hi

If you are using Word's Master documents functionality, you need to read
this:
Why Master Documents corrupt
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/WhyMasterDocsCorrupt.htm
and
How to recover a Master Document
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/RecoverMasterDocs.htm

Question 1: What you're seeing is a description of the style and the direct
formatting that has been applied to the paragraph. See
How the Styles and Formatting pane works in Word 2002 and 2003

http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/sfpane/StylesAndFormattingPane.html

Question 2 and Question 3: Can you tell us what you mean by "show paragraph
mark w/ page layout view".

Hope this helps.

Hi Shauna,

Per your request, the show paragraph mark with page layout view means that I
activate the paragraph mark icon. It so happens that the page layout view is
the background when viewing paragraph marks and formats in the document.
Thanks for your response.

Any text that is displayed when you have nonprinting characters displayed
but not otherwise is most likely formatted as Hidden.

Thanks Suzanne. I finally discerned that via a better understanding of
formatting and styles.

Any suggestions for creating a template using word 2003. The information in
......"RecoverMasterDocsContent.htm" doesn't seem to work for word 2003
because I am unable to find the "normal.dot" file using Windows Explorer as
recommended. Thanks.

RecoverMasterDocsContent.htm has nothing to do with creating a template.
You do not need to find normal.dot to create a template.

For information on the different kinds of templates, tabs on the file new
dialog, and locations of templates folders see
http://addbalance.com/usersguide/templates.htm.
