Styles and Header problems

I just installed Microsoft Office 12 on my PC and i am getting some problems
with it
When i try to format some text to a Header style text, it just didnt work. I
had a PC with Office 2003 in the past that had the same problem.

In Office 2003, what i did was create a TOC and it would tell me that i did
not have any heading formatted text and would then have toolbar to change the
style/formatting of 'normal body text' to either 'heading 1, 2 or 3 etc
text'.

Someone please help

Some additional info:

In office 2003, the formatting of the text changed from normal to heading1,
but it did not change the font and size

It is possible that direct formatting has been applied to text. What
happens if you select the text and press Ctrl+SpaceBar (which resets
font formatting to that of the underlying paragraph style)?

OK i tried this using Office 12 and nothing happens. I created a TOC using
another PC via Office 2003 and i opened it in Office 12 and tried to make
more TOC contents but it does not seem to be formatting the text

How are you applying the heading style? Note that applying a style to
part of a paragraph doesn't really apply the heading; it links
character formatting to text.

What you need to do is select entire paragraphs (one or more) or
nothing at all. In the latter case, the style is applied to the
current paragraph, in the former case it is applied to all of the
selected paragraphs.
