Styles and line spacing in Word 2008

I'm having trouble with Word 2008, which I just installed.

I cannot switch a group of paragraphs to "Normal" without also
switching other paragraphs of other styles based on Normal.

The same goes for taking paragraphs of Normal style and making them
single or double spaced. Other not selected paragraphs are also then
changed.

What am I doing wrong? This behavior did not seem to happen with Word
2004.
