Styles and TOC

Hi,
I've inherited a doc where there are custom styles. I need to make a TOC.
If I created it myself I would have used Heading 1 - 9 and modified them to
match the formatting I needed. They didnt. Instead some of the text that I
need for my TOC is formatted as paragraph style , other is character style
type.
Here are my questions:
1. Can a custom style be made into one that is a Heading Style? How?
2. How do I add styles to the TOC options window? I thought if I added the
style to the template it would show up in that window.
3. Is there a way to change a character style to a paragraph style? Or is
this unimportant.
4. Lastly, is there an easier way?

On the Paragraph dialog, set the Outline level. Levels 1 - 9 correspond to
headings 1 - 9. (ie, all styles with outline level = 2 are treated
equivalently for TOC purposes.

All paragraph styles are listed automatically (by default, anyway --
iperhaps there's some way to change this).

3. Is there a way to change a character style to a paragraph style? Or is
this unimportant.

No, you can't change a character style to a paragraph style. It's
unimportant unless you're trying to build the TOC from character styles.

4. Lastly, is there an easier way?

If the document is very badly formatted, it is sometimes quicker to remove
ALL formatting and start again. Another option is to use Find and Replace to
look for formatting and replace with your (well-defined) styles.

Thank you so much!!! I guess the big issue for me know is to change the
formatting that is set as "char" to paragraph. You say to use find and
replace. I will give that a try!
