styles functionality in Word 2002

Julie

can someone please point me to documentation about how to best deal with
Word styles. Mine change haphazardly - I've tried all of the fixes given
through the Que, Sybex, and inside/out books. Especially, numbered lists.
I do courseware where I detail how to steps using 1, 2, 3. I need to be
able to control not only the numbering but also the paragraph spacing (space
before/after) so just creating a list style doesn't do the trick cuz can't
control paragraph spacing.

If I just try to create a paragraph style that includes numbering, it really
gets screwed up. I have now created a list style. Then I create a paragraph
style that is based on the list style. Is that what I need to do? Geesh

Help please

Hi Julie,

Numbering is special and having not read the books you are referring to, I
can't tell you whether following their procedures would help or not.

See: How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Word
document

You can't base a paragraph style on a list style (nor can you do the
opposite); the list style simply uses the paragraph formatting of the
underlying paragraph style. Instead of using list styles to apply
numbering, it is better to use paragraph styles to apply all text
formatting.

If you want multi-level numbering, make sure you link a paragraph
style to each of the nine numbering levels, exactly as described at
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/outlinenumbering.html.

If you need single-level numbering, you can use the built-in List
Number style. If you don't like the default settings, you can modify
the style as desired. Note that it is safest to modify the hanging
indent (if necessary) from the Numbering dialog box (accessed via the
Modify Style dialog box).

If you need to restart single-level numbering, see:

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Numbering/ListRestartMethods.htm

In addition, when working with numbered documents, it is probably best
to make sure that the option to "Automatically update document styles"
is cleared on the Templates and Add-Ins dialog box (to access this
dialog box, choose Templates and Add-Ins from the Tools menu).
