Styles Keep Changing Names

I am working with Word 2002 and Windows XP. I have all the latest
updates and service packs for both.

I am using styles extensively in my document. I have deleted all
unused styles. None of the styles I am using are based on the
"Normal" style. I am not using "Normal.dot," I have my own document
template.

There is nothing turned on in the AutoCorrect options. NOTHING!
Every checkbox on every tab in the AutoCorrect options is unchecked.
Please don't tell me to turn off the "Define styles based on your
formatting." It is not checked.

None of the styles are set to "Automatically update." While I am
working on my document, the names of my styles keep changing. I have
a style called "Section Heading," and after a while it is called
"Section Heading Char" or "Section Heading Char Char." This happens
to most of the styles. I keep fixing the names and saving them back
to the template, but it keeps changing them back.

Any ideas? Please don't tell me to to turn off the "Define styles
based on your formatting." It is not checked.

Word SP1 is supposed to fix the multiple "char" problem, IIRC. Make
sure it's applied correctly.

As far as appending a 'char' to the style name, this happens when you
apply a paragraph style to something that isn't an entire paragraph.
Apparently "it's a feature, not a bug". To avoid it, before you apply
a paragraph style make sure that either the cursor is blinking in the
paragraph (i.e. nothing is selected), or you have the *entire*
paragraph selected.

Search these newsgroups for "style name char" or similar. You'll find
lots of threads on this topic.
