Styles not being applied in Word 2007

Hi, I am having trouble getting Word 2007 to accept styles when I
attempt to apply a change. It is basically behaving strangely - when
I try to apply a style to a selcted paragraph, only the text in the
paragraph changes but the white space at the end of the paragraph
won't change. When I continue typing at the end of the paragraph, new
text appears in an earlier (unwanted) style. If I click on the
desired style button many times, I can sometimes get the style to
remain selected, but as soon as I type anything, it switches back to
the earlier style.

If anyone can help, would appreciate it!

A paragraph style gets applied only to the current paragraph, unless
multiple paragraphs are selected. If you want to apply a style to more than
the current paragraph, then select everything you want affected, and then
click on the desired style.

The other thing to be wary of is that some styles possibly can have a
different following style. For example, some of us set up Heading 1, Heading
2, etc. such that when you press Enter, a body text (non-heading) style of
some kind happens automatically. This saves one from having to explicitly
apply a style after typing a heading, since one typically would be switching
to a body style immediately after a heading.
