Styles, Numbered Lists and IncludeText

I have a mail merge main document that uses IncludeText to include one of
about 45 different files depending on the value of a MergeField. Some of the
included files are just a few numbered paragraphs; others are several pages
with various headings and separately numbered lists under each heading.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to retain the formatting of the included files
once they're included in the main document and subsequently merged. The
included text seems to always take on the style of the paragraph in the main
document that has the IncludeText field. If that paragraph style is numbered,
then every paragraph in the included file, including the headings, are
numbered. If the paragraph style is not numbered, then none of the included
paragraphs are numbered, even tho they're numbered (via a style) in their own
document.

I've tried copying the relevant paragraph styles to both the main and
included files, so they have the same style names and same formatting. I've
also tried using styles in the included file that don't exist at all in the
main document. Neither works. FYI, the only switch I'm using on IncludeText
is MergeFormat.

How can I get the styles of an included file to look exactly the same after
being included/merges as they do when I view them in their own document? In
particular, how can I get automatically numbered lists in included files to
retain their numbering (including restart info when there are several lists)
after being included via IncludeText?

Hi =?Utf-8?B?SkJD?=,

Which version of Word are we discussing?

Is there a CharFormat or MergeFormat switch in the IncludeText field?
